TEHRAN – Iranian President Hassan Rouhani has condemned terrorist attacks in Paris and Lebanon, noting that the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant has targeted Islam as the religion of peace.

“Islam is religion of peace and mercy” and terrorists “should not be allowed” to commit “such acts that spread Islamophobia, especially in Europe and the U.S., where many Muslims are living,” he said during a meeting at the Supreme Council of the Cultural Revolution in Tehran on Tuesday.

He said that international unity and determination is essential to counter terrorist acts.

“Iran, as a victim of terrorism, condemns terrorist acts and murder of the innocent people and will counter terrorist activities seriously,” he asserted.

He highlighted the importance of serious fight against terrorists, saying the financial source of ISIL should be explored.

Russian President Vladimir Putin on Wednesday set up a commission to combat terrorism financing, the Kremlin said.

Putin said terrorists appear to be financed from 40 countries, including some G20 member states.
